Attention Pet Owners
As a reminder to all pet owners, it is now time to license your dogs and cats. The cost is only $6. The license is available from late December to March 31. After that, you incur a $5 late fee. This license will need to be renewed annually.
It is the law to have your pet licensed and the fine for an unlicensed dog or cat is $150.
Also, don't forget to keep them on a leash and you ARE responsible to pick up after them.
The Village's share for Portage County's Animal Control program last year was $4097.00. This fee is derived from the county's ratio of dogs per resident in each community. The license fees from your dog and your neighbor's dog will decrease the Village's portion of this fee, as our ratio will go down. With the village budget as tight as it is, this is money we can no longer afford to give away and we are asking every dog owner in the Village to license their pet. There are communities within the county who actually receive money from the county for having their ratio low.
Remember, it is the law to have your pets licensed. The license only costs $6 for a spayed or neutered dog, but the fine for an unlicensed pet is $150. Licenses can be purchased at the Municipal Center or the Humane Society of Portage County. A rabies certificate will need to be shown prior to purchasing a license.
